Shortly after Axel Verland led his people to the region, the Steppes to the east erupted with orcs pouring down into the fertile grasslands. Only the combined efforts of all the civilized races fought off the horde. However, the orc invasions have become a regular feature of life in Verland. There have been eight since the first one 200 years ago, each one named after the King of Verland and the Orc Warlord who led the clashing forces, from the first one, the Axel-Ultek War to the most recent one eight years ago, the Aloysius-Grond War.
During the Orc Horde invasions, the usually minimal standing army is swelled by pretty much every able-bodied man and woman who can hold a sword or cast a spell. While most veterans of an Orc Horde War go back to their plows or crafts with a story to tell, a few nightmares and a battered sword over the mantle, many find that they can no longer live the life of a farmer, and quite a few adventurers got their start fighting in one of the Orc-Horde wars. In fact, many dwarfs and elves have fought in several.
